Pew Research Union Wins Union Election

Washington DC — On January 21, employees of the Pew Research Center won their union in an election conducted by the National Labor Relations Board, becoming the latest organization to unionize with the Nonprofit Professional Employees Union, IFPTE Local 70.

In November, a majority of eligible staff requested that Pew Research Center management voluntarily recognize their union. Management declined, prompting workers to proceed through a formal election process. In the weeks that followed, employees navigated an active and at times challenging dialogue about unionization while remaining focused on their shared commitment to the Center’s mission and to one another.

The organizing committee celebrated their victory, stating, “for now, we want to pause to recognize what this moment represents: our colleagues choose to stand together, even amid uncertainty, with the shared goal of strengthening our workplace for everyone. That spirit of collaboration, care, and mutual respect is what will guide us forward.”

NPEU President Amy Chin-Lai praised the workers’ determination and professionalism throughout the process. “Pew Research Center workers demonstrated resilience, integrity, and a deep commitment to their work and each other,” said Chin-Lai. “Their decision to unionize reflects a clear desire for a constructive partnership at work, and NPEU is proud to stand with them as they move forward.”

The Pew Research Union looks forward to taking their hard-earned seat at the table and beginning the process of negotiating their first collective bargaining agreement in the coming months.
