Carnegie Endowment for International Peace Staff Win Union Election
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Nonprofit Professional Employees Union (NPEU), IFPTE Local 70 is proud to announce a decisive victory for the dedicated staff of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, who won their union election with 87% of the vote on October 15-16. A supermajority of staff members across the organization chose to unionize in June, and called on Carnegie to voluntarily recognize. After several months of negotiations over recognition of the union, the union and management agreed in September to a union recognition election conducted by the American Arbitration Association.
The staff's collective power secures a future of equity at Carnegie while further strengthening the nonprofit sector. Union members, organizing under the mantle of the Carnegie Endowment Workers Alliance (CEWA), are now prepared to negotiate a first collective bargaining agreement that will embody their shared commitment to transparency, equity, and accountability.
“We are incredibly proud to welcome this new unit," said NPEU President Amy Chin-Lai. "Staff have clearly affirmed that their workplace must live up to the values they promote. We look forward to delivering our full support as they negotiate the strong contract they deserve."
“We are thrilled to announce that with an 87% majority voting in favor, the Carnegie Endowment Workers Alliance (CEWA) has won our union. We are proud to stand together in our commitment to improving our workplace and look forward to working with management to swiftly negotiate a collective bargaining agreement that promotes transparency, equity, and accountability, and moves our institution forward together,” shared the CEWA Organizing Committee.
“I’m excited that, with a strong show of union support, CEWA members can move forward in our work to support our institution, our colleagues, and our own work lives through collective bargaining,” stated Haley Clasen, a senior editor at Carnegie and member of the CEWA Organizing Committee. “I’m hopeful about what we can accomplish when we come together.”
With the recognition election complete, the union and management will commence negotiations in the coming months to secure a foundational first contract.
