RICHMOND, Va., Feb. 16, 2021 - The staff of The Commonwealth Institute for Fiscal Analysis (TCI) have joined together in union with the Nonprofit Professional Employees Union (NPEU) to form TCI United. TCI United has requested voluntary recognition from management, and the President & CEO, along with the Board of Directors, has indicated that TCI management is supportive of this effort.

The Commonwealth Institute for Fiscal Analysis works to advance racial and economic justice in Virginia by advocating for public policies that are designed in partnership with people most impacted, and shaped by credible, accessible fiscal and policy research.

“One of TCI’s core values is that its organizational culture, staff, partners, strategies, and investments should work to advance racial and economic justice within and beyond the organization,” said TCI United. “We, TCI staff members, are deeply committed to our mission, and believe one of the best ways to realize it is to organize and form a union.”

“Simply put, The Commonwealth Institute is its staff.  I firmly believe it is a fundamental human right of all workers to join or form a union. I support the right of TCI’s staff to form a union and take the necessary steps leading to voluntary recognition,” said Michael Cassidy, President & CEO of TCI.

“TCI’s Board of Directors is fully supportive of the staff forming a union. Our discussions to date have been marked by a real spirit of cooperation and an emphasis on our shared collective values,” said TCI Board Chair Latoya Asia. “The Board and management of TCI look forward to our continuing efforts to make TCI the most effective organization it can be.”

“We’re excited to welcome TCI United to NPEU,” said NPEU President Kayla Blado. “With their union, TCI staff will be able live out their values and create a more just and equitable workplace. We look forward to building a collaborative relationship with TCI management.”
