WASHINGTON, Oct. 29, 2020 - This week, the National Immigration Law Center (NILC) staff union received voluntarily recognized from NILC management. NILC Workers Union is part of the Nonprofit Professional Employees Union (NPEU).
“The NILC Workers Union is proud to have reached voluntary recognition of an inclusive staff union at NILC,” said representatives of the NILC Workers Union. “We know that this is just the beginning, and we’re excited to work with our colleagues to further our commitment to being a model for a just and equitable workplace — one that values transparency and empowers all staff, regardless of position, to have a say in the strategic direction of the organization.”
“For decades the National Immigration Law Center has worked closely with labor unions to fight for the dignity, safety, and equality of all workers through strong labor protections,” stated Marielena Hincapie, Executive Director of NILC. “Union representation strengthens our workforce and communities, and we are proud to have voluntarily recognized the NILC Workers Union. We look forward to this new stage in our partnership and to our continued efforts to defend and advance the rights of low-income immigrants across the country.”
“We’re excited for the members of NILC Workers Union!” said NPEU President Kayla Blado. “With a union, NILC staff will be able to live their progressive, pro-worker values and advance justice in and out of their workplace. Next, the NILC Workers Union will negotiate with management for a strong first contract—we look forward to supporting them!”
