An interview with NPEU member Claire Brawdy

What do you do at HAN?

I work as a Project Manager and help to run a few different areas of work, which means no two days are the same!

How long have you been a NPEU member?

I've been a part of NPEU since I joined our former organization, so since September 2019, give or take.

Is this your first time working in a unionized workplace? If so, how is it different from a non-union workplace you've worked in? If not, how is NPEU different from the previous union you were part of?

I had never worked in a unionized organization prior to this, and at first, I wasn't sure what it would entail. However, I quickly learned that being in a union meant that I had protections that I didn't always have in past jobs, and I was 110% confident that my coworkers had my back. The union created a consistent culture of camaraderie amongst colleagues, which was a new and empowering experience for me.

What has your overall experience been like working at a unionized workplace?

Overall it's been very positive. After my first year in the union, I was elected to be a steward, and most recently, was part of the bargaining team that negotiated our current contract. While that experience took a lot of time and energy, it's something that I am incredibly proud of.

What do you value most about your NPEU contract?

There are a lot of really wonderful provisions in our contract, but I'm most proud that we were able to secure formal professional development funds for unit members. Lifelong learning is important for me personally, and to have that investment in our growth is really awesome to see.

How would you like to see NPEU grow or develop in the next 5 years?

I would love to see unions become the norm in our society. Unions are essential to creating quality jobs and protecting workers. I would love to see NPEU to continue to grow and expand its reach!

What do you like to do outside of work?

Outside of work, I like to read, any chance that I get, write, garden, cook new recipes, and run.

Do you have any skills or talents that you could offer NPEU members, if they need it?

I'm always happy to talk to fellow NPEU members about the ins and outs of bargaining and be a listening ear.
