Q&A with NPEU Member Mo-Yain Tham

An interview with NPEU member Mo-Yain Tham

What do you do at JMA?

As a Researcher, I work on policy implementation and developing our strategic campaign for our NY team.

How long have you been a NPEU member?

If the start date is when we received voluntary recognition, it’s been 2 years.

Is this your first time working in a unionized workplace? If so, how is it different from a non-union workplace you've worked in? If not, how is NPEU different from the previous union you were part of?

This is the second time I’ve worked with my co-workers to unionize our workplace. I really valued how NPEU made sure we were driving the contract negotiations. NPEU staff genuinely listened to our concerns and questions as we worked through difficult or sticky parts of our negotiation. I also appreciated the support that other NPEU members provided to each other.

What has your overall experience been like working at a unionized workplace?

It seems like staffers feel less afraid to voice objections or concerns whenever management does something we find questionable. It has helped improve morale in our organization.

What do you value most about your NPEU contract?

I appreciated the opportunity to tailor our contract to address past issues and concerns that felt unique to our experience. It was great that we didn’t limit ourselves to a boilerplate contract.

How would you like to see NPEU grow or develop in the next 5 years?

It’s great seeing NPEU grow and become more diverse in terms of the range of non- profits joining. It’ll be great to see the diversification continue!

What do you like to do outside of work?

I’m an avid runner and with that comes a good appetite. I love exploring all the different food enclaves in NYC and making food discoveries.

Do you have any skills or talents that you could offer NPEU members, if they need it?

Hm - that’s a good question. I’m open to sharing ideas to keep members engaged during the union organizing drive - it can be an understandable struggle.

What are your social media handles?
