WASHINGTON, July 1, 2021 - The Catholic Legal Immigration Network, Inc. (CLINIC) voluntarily recognized their staff’s union — CLINIC Workers United (CWU). CWU is organized with the Nonprofit Professional Employees Union (NPEU) Local 70, IFPTE.
“Receiving voluntary recognition from CLINIC’s management is a crucial step toward building a workplace representative of CLINIC’s mission and values,” said the CLINIC Workers United organizing committee. “Our union will help ensure that CLINIC’s external values of promoting the dignity and rights of people are reflected internally toward its staff.”
The formation of unions is fully endorsed by Catholic social teaching, and the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops has consistently supported the right of workers to organize for purposes of collective bargaining. “Through our union, we will make CLINIC a more welcoming and sustainable organization for all workers, especially for Black, people of color, and those staff marginalized in other and multiple ways,” said the CLINIC Workers United organizing committee.
“Congratulations to CLINIC Workers United,” said Interim President Katie Barrows. "Through the power of their union, CLINIC workers have secured a voice in their workplace decisions, allowing them to live their values and create an even better organization.”
