WASHINGTON, Jan. 27, 2022 - The staff union at the Healthcare Anchor Network (HAN) has ratified their first union contract with HAN management. HAN staff joined the Nonprofit Professional Employees Union (NPEU) and was voluntarily recognized after HAN became an independent organization.
The new contract establishes strong wage and leave standards, and puts in place a process for collaboration between the union and management, including:
A base salary of $52,000
Guaranteed cost of living adjustment in each year of the contract - 3 percent increase in the first year, 2.5 percent in the second year, 2 percent in the third year, and 2 percent in the fourth year
Guaranteed professional development funds for bargaining unit members
10 weeks of paid parental leave
The establishment of a Labor Management Committee that will meet quarterly to address issues of mutual concern
“We’re proud to start HAN off with pay and benefits that will attract and retain high-quality staff,” said Claire Brawdy of the HAN union bargaining committee. “With this contract we are living our values and are thankful for our partnership with HAN, and the support of our members.”
“As a small nonprofit, we are glad that the contract strikes an important balance between the stability of the organization and excellent benefits for the staff,” said David Zuckerman, President of HAN. “We appreciate the collegial working relationships that exist within our team and the value of the Union members’ contributions to our future growth.”
HAN began in December 2016 when The Democracy Collaborative (TDC) convened leaders from 40 health systems across the U.S. to explore how their systems could more fully harness their economic power to inclusively and sustainably benefit the long-term health and well-being of the communities they serve. In 2022, HAN separated from TDC to become its own organization focused on catalyzing anchor institutions to leverage their significant assets, in partnership with the community, to build inclusive, local economies. After HAN separated, management voluntarily recognized HAN’s staff union with NPEU.
