WASHINGTON, Sept. 27, 2021 - The Brookings Institution has voluntarily recognized their staff’s union, Brookings United, and their selection of the Nonprofit Professional Employees Union (NPEU) Local 70, IFPTE to be their collective bargaining representative. The Brookings United Organizing Committee released the following statement.
Statement from the Brookings United Organizing Committee:
“We are extremely excited to begin this new chapter in Brookings’s rich 100-year history. This has been a team effort since the beginning and we are incredibly proud and inspired by the hard work it took to get to this turningpoint. With the recognition of our union, we will be setting a new standard for representation in the workplace.
“Our strength as contributors is rooted in our shared mission of promoting workplace diversity and inclusion, ensuring Brookings is competitive among peer organizations, and expanding work opportunities for staff to better prepare the next generation of leaders. This union is a much needed step forward in achieving those goals.
“We are looking forward to beginning contract negotiations with our colleagues in service of our mission.
Statement from NPEU President Katie Barrows:
“Congratulations to Brookings United on winning recognition. Brookings employees continue the trend of nonprofit workers joining together in union to create better, stronger workplaces. With their union, Brookings employees gain a voice to raise workplace standards and we stand ready to support them as they negotiate a strong first contract.”
