NEW YORK, May 11, 2021- Today, the union of ACLU national workers, ACLU Staff United, was voluntarily recognized by ACLU management. ACLU Staff United is organized with the Nonprofit Professional Employees Union (NPEU), IFPTE Local 70.

“We appreciate that we can now get to the bargaining table to create a better, stronger ACLU for the members of our bargaining unit. We formed this union to ensure workers have a voice on important decisions about our work environment, to promote transparency and accountability, and to ensure equity in our workplace. This is just the beginning of our work and we look forward to speaking more with our bargaining unit members about their priorities and negotiating a contract with ACLU management.”

ACLU Staff United announced their union in January to gain a meaningful say in workplace decisions. The staff union’s priorities include addressing retention of and investment in staff from underrepresented groups and creating a clear and equitable process for determining salaries, benefits, promotions, and layoffs.

“Congratulations to ACLU Staff United. Through strong organizing, they won their union,” said NPEU Interim President Katie Barrows. “We are glad ACLU Staff United was able to collaborate with management on a voluntary recognition agreement, and we stand ready to support them as they negotiate their first union contract.”

ACLU Staff United is made up of national American Civil Liberties Union workers from the national headquarters in New York and offices in D.C., San Francisco, and Raleigh; national chapter workers in the Dakotas and Puerto Rico; and remote workers across the U.S.
