J Street Staff Unionizes with the Nonprofit Professional Employees Union
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
WASHINGTON, April 16, 2020 - The staff of J Street are thrilled to be unionizing with the Nonprofit Professional Employees Union (NPEU) as J Street Workers Union. The J Street Workers Union made the request to management for voluntary recognition, and management has signaled they will recognize the J Street Workers Union. Management and union still have to agree on which employees are in the Union and sign the voluntary recognition agreement.
“The J Street Workers Union looks forward to working collaboratively with management on a constructive collective bargaining process.” According to Shifra Sered of J Street Workers Union. “All of J Street’s staff hold similar values, and our union will serve as a mechanism to live up to these values, ensure accountability and transparency and bring about shared leadership. We believe that recognition of this union will demonstrate J Street’s continued leadership in the progressive movement and will move us towards making J Street as strong as possible.”
“We look forward to J Street management officially recognizing their staff union,” said NPEU President Kayla Blado. “We are beyond excited to have J Street Workers Union join NPEU and add to the growing trend of nonprofit workers unionizing.”
This is the second group of nonprofit employees to join NPEU this week. Earlier in the week, workers at the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law announced they were unionizing. NPEU continues to organize in these uncertain times because all workers deserve a voice in the workplace and the stability that comes with a union.
The J Street Workers Union looks forward to signing the voluntary recognition agreement and beginning a constructive process of negotiations with J Street management in the coming months.
