IFPTE Local 70 Celebrates 20th Anniversary with New Name, Website and Logo

WASHINGTON, Feb. 6, 2018 – In celebration of 20 years of organizing professionals at nonprofit organizations International Federation of Professional and Technical Engineers (IFPTE) Local 70 is making a change. It is rebranding itself as the Nonprofit Professional Employees Union (NPEU). The name change recognizes the union’s surging membership—which has seen a 257 percent increase in the last eight years—and presents a clearer identity to future members. NPEU represents hundreds of nonprofit professionals at organizations such as the Economic Policy Institute (EPI), the Center for American Progress (CAP), and the Center for Community Change (CCC).

“Our members view our organization as the union for nonprofit professionals, and by becoming the Nonprofit Professional Employees Union (NPEU) we signal that we are dedicated to helping nonprofit employees improve their work and workplace,” said NPEU President Alan Barber.

NPEU was formed in 1998 when EPI voluntarily recognized its employees’ union. NPEU has grown substantially in recent years with the addition of employees at CAP and CCC, who joined together in union in 2016 and ratified first contracts in 2017. Organizing victories like these have increased NPEU’s membership from 70 in 2010 to 250 in 2017.

In addition to a new name, NPEU has redesigned its website and logo. The revamped website has a modern design that allows users to easily find information about NPEU and take the next steps in joining together in union. The new logo allows the public and potential members to quickly understand who and what NPEU is with its full name and acronym in an approachable typeface and format.

“Whether familiar with unions or just looking for information, the new website helps people at nonprofits gain a clearer picture of the many positive ways in which a union can impact their workplace,” said Barber. “The site will be a great resource for members and visitors alike.”
